Validation test of the Index of colors’ characteristics

Every color produces a psychological effect
on the unconscious of the one who observes it.
Chromoterapists and litotherapists use this effect to cure;
the advertising professional uses it to give personality
to a brand and to influence a behavior.

THE INDEX OF COLORS' CHARACTERISTICS

B Home - Astrocolors EN

If traditional symbolism was a basis for some colors, the book Astrocolors is the first to have dealt with the psychology of 77 different hues through a steady progression.

To determine its character, every color has been compared with the 76 others by a long questioning — "which one is the most optimistic, the most quiet?... It has revealed the dynamic and the internal contradictions of very different or very close hues. This allowed to establish the definitions of the INDEX OF COLORS’ CHARACTERISTICS which was then the object of the test of validation below. These definitions are naturally not exhaustive and are also an artistic creation.

AIMS OF THE TEST

Do Western people link colors to psychological values, and does a majority hold the same psychological definitions? In this case, do people in Western culture link every color to the psychological definitions in the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS?

METHODE

Street statistical survey of random people. Three psychological definitions of the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS separated from their three corresponding colors are presented. People are asked to link every color to the psychological definition that fits it best. Three sheets test the psychological definitions for three colors of very different hue: 21, 44, 62; three colors of the same hue but different luminosity: 19, 66, 67; and three colors of very close hue: 25, 26, 28. that is to say more than 10% of the colors of the INDEX (77 colors).

RESULTS

For every sheet of the test, there are six possibilities to link the three colors to the three psychological definitions: A, B, C, D, E, and F.

If the answers were a matter of chance, the probability of choosing one possibility over another would be the same, that is to say 1 / 6 of the numbers in the answers (17%).

Results of sheet 1

The participants linked big differences of hue to psychological values and a great majority chose the possibility B (38%).

image
  • B matches every color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.
  • F, D, E match only one color with its definition in the INDEX.
  • A, C do not match any color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.

A great majority of the participants linked every color of a very different hue to its psychological definition in the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS.

Results of sheet 2

The participants linked the differences of luminosity to psychological values and a great majority chose the possibility E (40%)

image
  • E matches every color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.
  • B,C, A match only one color with its definition in the INDEX.
  • D, F do not match any color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.

A great majority of the participants linked every color of the same hue but different luminosity to its psychological definition in the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS.

Results of sheet 3

The participants linked small differences of hue to psychological values and a great majority chose the possibility D (34%).

image
  • D matches every color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.
  • C, A, B match only one color with its definition in the INDEX.
  • F, E do not match any color with its psychological definition in the INDEX.

A great majority of the participants linked every color of a very different hue to its psychological definition in the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS.

ANALYSIS OF RESULTS

There are no significant variations according to the investigator, the age group, the place, the size of urban area, the time taken to complete the test, and the level of interest amongst participants.

Male / Female

37% of all participants (average of the three sheets) linked all of the colors with their psychological definition in the INDEX, of which 40% were female against 35% male.

More females consistently linked every color to its psychological definition in the INDEX.

Education level

37% of all participants (average of the three sheets) linked all of the colors with their psychological definitions in the INDEX, of which 49% had two years of post-seconday education against 31% without. Detailed analysis of the results shows that the difference between males and females becomes less marked as their education level increases.

More people with two years of post-seconday education consistently linked every color to its psychological definition in the INDEX.

CONCLUSION

A group of Western people of different sex, age, place, urban area, and education level links colors to psychological values, and opts predominantly for the same choice of psychological definitions.

It can be clearly noted that this choice corresponds to the definition of each color as it appears in the INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS. Up to one out of every two females and people with two years of post-seconday education linked every color with its psychological definition in the INDEX. The education results raise the question of the ability of participants to understand the adjectives of the definitions.

Knowledge about hue and luminosity are widely shared. Colors of very close hue are sometimes less identified (particularly amongst reds). The INDEX OF COLORS CHARACTERISTICS is a useful guide to help people to get their bearings in relation to some closely set colors.
